The Best Shaving Gels for Men

Shaving is a necessary evil. I don’t think I’ve met any man who genuinely enjoys shaving and if they do they’re either lying or a weirdo, or both. Shaving technology is always evolving and with this new technology, the idea is that shaving becomes easier, less painful and closer, so with this, in mind, we’re going to look at some of the best shaving gels on the market and what makes up a good shaving gel.

What’s in a gel matters

Ingredients go a long way to making a gel a hit or a miss. So what ingredients are good and what are bad? Given that men have three main skin types (oily, dry, sensitive) there are certain ingredients that work for some but don’t work for others. Here is a list of the stuff that can cause skin problems:

  • BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene)- This is linked to eye, lung and skin irritation and disruption of cell growth. It’s used as a preservative
  • Fragrance – A common cause of allergies and can consist of up to 200 different chemicals
  • Glycols -These retain moisture in gels, but can cause dermatitis and rashes
  • Isopentane – This solvent causes dry skin, dizziness and irritation of the nose
  • Palmitic acid – This emulsifier can cause allergic reactions when it comes in contact with the skin
  • Polytetrafluoroethylene -This is used to make Teflon and can cause cancer and heart disease
  • Sulphates – These can cause the destruction of the skin, dermatitis and irritation
  • Triethanolamine – This is found in foams and causes hormonal disruption

Now we’ve got the bad stuff out the way, let’s have a look at some of the stuff to keep an eye on that are beneficial:

  • Allantoin – Relieves irritation and heals damaged skin
  • Aloe Vera – a cactus used for moisturising and soothing skin
  • Essential Oils –
  • Glycerine – this humectant preserves moisture to prevent dryness
  • Oatmeal – hulled oatmeal helps eczema, psoriasis and rashes
  • Shea butter – this triglyceride is a moisturiser
  • Vitamin A/C/E – Antioxidants protecting the skin from the environment
